Review by Allie Knowlton
How can MacAuthur Foundation “genius grant” winner Bill Strickland have something practically significant to offer to us for our times? First of all, reading his book leaves the reader feeling hopeful and energized. It makes us want to take an indepth look at our dreams--especially those that we may have set aside because we thought them to be unrealistic or impractical.
In a span of over thirty years, Bill moved from an aimless youth on the north side of Pittsburg, Pennsylvania to a person transforming thousands of people through the creation of Manchester Bidwell, a jobs training center and community arts program. His personal story is remarkable in itself and yet what is perhaps most significant for us are his personal beliefs. These are interwoven throughout his book and they truly apply to us all.
One of his core beliefs is that each of us has the potential to succeed in our life by tapping into the spirit of the “genius” that runs through us. This inner "genius" empowers us to trust what we find most meaningful and motivates us to manifest our passion.
He also believes that it is our fear that inhibits us from following our passions that would create a meaningful life. He is convinced that following our dreams connects us with the world and other human beings. He believes that by following our dreams we can reach spiritual fulfillment and this is both possible and attainable for all of us!
Bill describes success in life as something we assemble from components we discover in our soul and our imagination which are gifts inherently ours from birth. He lives his own life from the princple that either we choose to impact our environment or our environment will define us.
Hope you enjoy this empowering read as much as we have!
