Sunset Puffin Cruise on Muscongus Bay
With its colorful, clown-like face and oversized bill, the Atlantic puffin has become one of the Maine coast's most celebrated icons. This is a remarkable accomplishment for a species that had nearly been exterminated from the state a century ago and is testament to the dedication of Audubon biologists and conservationists who led the way in reestablishing Maine 's seabird colonies. One of these colonies is Eastern Egg Rock at the mouth of Muscongus Ba , the southernmost and most accessible puffin breeding site. This ever-popular evening boat ride sails out of New Harbor to Easter Egg Rock, where we'll circle the island allowing great views of the puffins, terns and other seabirds that gather there. On the return cruise we'll pass by the lighthouse at Pemaquid Point. The trip is timed with the sunset, making it a perfect opportunity to combine birding and a lovely summer evening on the Maine coast. Maine Audubon 7-9 p.m. $28/member, $35/nonmember. November 1-6 • Maine Audubon Tour
Polar Bears of Hudson Bay
Every fall more than 1,000 polar bears gather along the west shore of Hudson Bay near Churchill, Manitoba, to wait for the sea ice to form that will give them access to the seals upon which they prey. During the few weeks from mid-October to early November these normally solitary bears—the world's largest terrestrial carnivores—are easily observed and photographed at extraordinarily close range from the safety of tundra buggies. Unquestionably it is one of the best wildlife viewing opportunities available anywhere. And in addition to the bears, there's a good chance of seeing other wildlife species, such as arctic hare, arctic fox, ptarmigan, snowy owl and gyrfalcon. Plus, if the weather cooperates, the northern lights put on a magnificent show. Churchill is an outpost town on the edge of the Canadian Arctic, but it is readily accessible and well equipped to accommodate visitors who travel there from around the world to see its wildlife. Note: this tour is completely “carbon neutral.” Contact: Maine Audubon, (207) 781-2330 x215 • trips@maineaudubon.org
