Wild Food Talk
Join "Wildman" Steve Brill (www.wildmanstevebrill.com) for a foraging event and learn about wild edibles in your area! A previous summer tour featured large quantities of summer mushrooms, and with enough rain beforehand, we might find choice spring species such as black-staining polypores, chicken mushrooms, wine-cap stropharias, and dryad's saddle. Cattails will be a highlight of the tour. This common water plant features cucumber-flavored shoots, immature flower heads similar to corn-on-the-cob, and copious amounts of golden pollen you can use in place of flour. Tarryville Park. The Peonies of Gilsland Farm
A century ago over 200 varieties of peonies were grown at Gilsland Farm. Many of them still bloom "in the wild" around the sanctuary, but there is also a formal peony garden, where in mid to late June "crowns" and "bombs" bloom in a glorious profusion of color. Staff horticulturist Margi Huber leads a peony tour, discussing the property's history as a working farm and plant nursery. 3-4 p.m. $6/member, $8/nonmember Maine Audubon, 20 Gilsland Farm Road, Falmouth, Maine 04105 • (207) 781-2330 x215 • trips@maineaudubon.org
