Register Now for the Global Peace Intention Experiment

The Intention Experiment folks have a new project to reduce violence that kicks off on September 14th. Their website is now ready for anyone wanting to sign up for the Global Peace Intention Experiment.

The experiment will be the first in a series of Peace Intention Experiments testing the power of group intention to lower violence in areas around the world.

According to the facilitators, this could be the largest scientific study in history, with hundreds of thousands of participants sending an intention for peace under highly controlled scientific conditions.

They have assembled a scientific advisory body of leaders in consciousness research, to devise a strict protocol and measure violence levels before and after the intention is sent to see if there is any effect.

The website to register is: http://www.theintentionexperiment.com/

Talking Fish!

Talking fish are a staple of movies and many kids cartoons, but it turns out that real fish verbally communicate, too!  In a paper published in the July 18 issue of the journal Science, researchers have linked vocalizing fish as an evolutionary step that eventually resulted in us being able to chat over coffee.

The species they studied was the midshipman fish. By mapping the developing brain cells in newly hatched midshipman fish larvae and comparing them to those of other species, Andrew Bass and his colleagues, Edwin Gilland of Howard University and Robert Baker of New York University, found that the brain and neural circuitry required for animal vocalization evolved long before the first critters ventured onto dry land.

The same hardware that allows birds to sing, cows to moo, frogs to croak and pigs to squeal was likely started hundreds of millions of years ago with the hums and grunts of fish.

Want to hear a fish who sounds like a fog horn?

Here is a link to hear the "hum" advertisement call of a male midshipman fish--also referred to as toadfish--as he broadcasts to attract females to his nest.

Pretty weird, huh?

Here is a video of the interview with biologist, Andrew Bass (Now he sounds like the right man for the job!) of Cornell University.

Something Dark That Way Goes?

This simulation of dark matter distribution was created in 2005 by the Virgo Consortium of international scientists using supercomputers at the Max Planck Society, Germany

Having been shot apart from each other in the force of the Big Bang, galaxies are apparently defying gravity.  Instead of coming to a gradual slow down and even eventually coming back together, the speed of their trajectory toward infinity is accelerating!

Scientists have theorized that something, what they have termed "dark energy" is counteracting the force of gravity.  “The discovery of dark energy has greatly changed how we think about the laws of nature,” said Edward Witten, a theorist at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, N.J.

Last year a committee from the National Academy of Sciences recommended that a dark energy observatory be the next mission in an astrophysics program called Beyond Einstein. (Is anybody else wondering how they plan to observe something they can't see?)

Cellphone Use Health Threats

Research linking cancers to cell phone use has been gathering for over ten years. Now an article in the British daily Telegraph, reports that new research has shown that just five minutes of exposure to mobile phone emissions can trigger changes that occur during cancer development.

Scientists found mobile signals can activate cell division – central to the growth of tumors - even at very low power levels.

According to Joseph Mercola, DO, the best way to protect yourself is with a hands-free WIRED earpiece that uses an air tube to transmit sound. Also make sure the wire is SHIELDED, which prevents the wire from acting as an antenna that could attract more information-carrying radio waves directly to your brain.

Still don't think your cell phone could pose a risk? Here is a stunning video of cellphones being used to pop corn!

Here is all you need to know to start a recycling program.  When I was working at an ad agency in New York, I helped to organize our multi-office building's recycling program.  We managed to recycle a ton of office paper that would have wound up in a landfill before my office moved to a building that had its own recycling program.

How to Start a Recycling Program

There are a few key elements to starting any recycling program for a business, a school, an organization, an apartment building or just in your home.

  1. Decide what to recycle—Evaluate how much space you have to sort and store materials and what items you tend to go through. Paper products are a safe bet to be recycled, and aluminum or steel cans are valuable. Other commonly accepted items include glass and plastic bottles.
  2. Find a vendor—Check with your local recycling center, municipality and waste hauler to find out what kind of materials are accepted in your area. The green Earth 911 recycling locator (http://earth911.org/recycling/start-recycling-program--click on the top of the page) can help.
  3. Decide on storage—Washable plastic bins or trash cans are the best and cardboard boxes are good too. Be sure to rinse out the containers that held food to avoid critters.
  4. Educate participants—If items are put in the wrong containers, it means more work for you and could mean materials might not be recycled. Let the people know what to do.
  5. Label bins—Print up a sheet of special instructions, such as: remove caps, stomp on containers, break down cardboard boxes, bundle newspapers, etc.
  6. Maintain and monitor—Keep the storage bins clean and dry and make sure materials don’t pile up. A clean recycling area encourages others to keep it clean and uncluttered. Watch for critters from unwashed containers.
  7. Reward good behavior—Praise your participants and share any monetary rewards from dropping off materials.
